Social Networks and their role in telecommunications fraud

Meredith K. Mays, a spokeswoman with the International Association of Chiefs of Police, said it’s only natural that law enforcement agencies gravitate to social networking sites. “As technology evolves, people adapt,’’ Mays said. “Law enforcement agencies are constantly looking for new mediums that will aid in the prevention and fighting of crime.”
With the advent of modern communications there has been an explosion of applications that enable people to communicate in ways that were not possible a decade ago. Social Networking, which takes many forms and has many followers both in the corporate environment as well as in the personal environment, is now being used as an aid to investigations. This workshop will examine the current status of social networks and how these can be the drivers for fraud. In particular, delegates will explore the dangers that such activity presents as well as the advantages to fraud investigations.
